Melatonin
Melatonin is a hormone secreted mainly, but not only, by a gland in the brain (the pineal gland or epiphysis); it is extremely important because it regulates the body's circadian rhythm, that is, our body's biological clock.
Its secretion is regulated by light: when the light stimulus reaches the retina, a signal is transmitted to the epiphysis where its secretion is inhibited. Darkness, on the contrary, stimulates its release. Its sedative effect on the brain is therefore information that tells the latter that the time has come to sleep and rest. When melatonin production is not adequate (it decreases during the adult and mature phase of life), external supplementation can be used.
Lavender essential oil
